Have you ever thought about how your content is being discovered in the online space, more precisely how it’s found on a search engine, like Pinterest?
With SEO and search engine optimization, you prepare your content with keywords or search phrases your ideal audience is looking for. You add those phrases and words all through your content and Pinterest account. That is going to tell Pinterest what exactly you’re about and it will put you in front of people using those phrases and words.
To find said keywords and phrases you need to conduct keyword research. When I first start with a client I take the information from their Onboarding form including their ideal client, phrases they use, taglines, the brand’s mission, industry leaders, and competitors. I also go through their website and Instagram and pull content pillars and keywords.
I use this information to generate a list of words I’ll start searching for on Pinterest using the search bar. From there I dig into the suggested searches, saving anything and everything. I use Pinterest Trends to see if there’s anything that matches and the ads tool where you can choose targeted keywords. I never make an ad, just pretend so I get access to the tool. This will also give you search volume.
Now I have a huge list of words, I then go through them and delete anything that’s not related to my client’s niche. And go back and do more research if I think I’m missing anything.
When I’m done I take these keywords and make board titles and descriptions, I make as many boards as I need to start getting the content out. Usually around 10, if the client has a ton of boards I always go through and clean up.
One thing get a lot of questions about is if I optimize existing pins, and the answer is very rarely. I have done it earlier where a pin has zero views, and then I’ve gone in and made an optimized title and description. But again rarely. I just don’t see the benefit. I’m already going to be making a lot of new optimized pins for every single piece of content my client has.
If you’re not doing these steps to add keywords throughout your Pinterest and content you might as well just skip the whole thing.
